Smitfraud is a spyware program that can reak havoc on a users system. The main purpose of this spyware program is to change the users desktop and make it so the desktop can not be changed back. The secondary purpose of smitfraud is normally to push some sort of fake anti-spyware program and get the user to purchase this fake program to remove the smitfraud software.

The most common reason for smitfraud being on a system is from a fake codec being installed on a users system. Normally the user was asked to install the codec in order to view a website or video file.

Common free program like Spybot are currently not able to remove this threat. In many cases you need to purchase anti-spyware software in order to remove this threat. There are a few free tools to help remove Smitfraud but if you got Smitfraud in the first place your system was not properly protected and you would still need to purchase anti-spyware software anyways. The free removal tools for this specific software works about 50% of the time.
