My Desktop has been Highjacked

If you can not change your desktop background and it says something like Highjacked or if it tells you to go to a specific site for anti-virus software then most likely you have something call Smitfraud.

The most important thing here is not to buy any of the fake anti-virus software offered from this malicious trojan virus. These fake anti-virus and anti-spyware programs will do little to solve your problems and you will only be helping out the makers of Smitfraud.

How did I get it in the first place?

Most of the time Smitfraud is installed via a fake video codec. You were tricked into installing a program that was free and now you are suffering the side effects. You should always have up to date anti-virus software and even more important is having up to date anti-spyware software. No that you are already infected it can be very hard to remove these traces.
