The Netbook Craze Begins
It all started with the humble Eee PC by Asus. If you looked at it during that time, you'll probably see what I saw; a miniaturized laptop that sacrifices a lot of functionality just so it could function as an ultra-portable Internet device. That the keyboard was only a fraction of what you'd see in a normal notebook seemed to be a bad joke; how could any grown person even type on that thing? And the trackpad, too, was very hard to maneuver. It didn't even have an optical drive for my installers.
The way I see it, the Eee had only one redeeming quality. It was a lot cheaper than a laptop. Not dirt cheap, mind, but the amount you need to spend for a decent laptop will enable you to purchase about 3 little units. That's what I thought it was for, initially. Something parents will buy for their kids to initiate them into the world of the technology and the Internet. Well, I got that wrong.
What happened next was history. Many were apparently attracted to the Eee, not only because it was cheap, but also because the world is slowly getting more and more reliant on the Internet. The Eee is not only ultra-portable, but also has a battery that lasts longer than many notebooks. It was similar to a mobile phone in that regard: You stay connected more consistently, and all you have to do to email or IM is to find a desk and a Wi-Fi area to open it up.
Since the Eee started to pick up on popularity, a whole bunch of other 'netbook' models have come out of the woodwork, including the Asus bringing out newer netbook models. With every one, there are always the similarities. All have emphasis on portability and all have batteries that last a long time. But when you see the range of models available, how do you choose which one to purchase?
You have to make an informed choice when buying a netbook of your own. The best way to get information from each one is to read up on reviews and specifications on the models. Look for sites that give these to help you decide. Know what you're looking for and compare to the add-ons of each netbook model. Once you've found one that suits your lifestyle, get ready to start looking at netbooks.
