These sorts of things used to be simple. You had the computers, the desktop printers and the paper, and you printed text – in black and white. These days, things are different – modern desktop printers are capable of much more than simple ink on paper text printing. You can, for instance, print in color – something that would have been prohibitively expensive a decade ago. You can print extremely quickly with laser printing technology (the same technology used in photocopiers).
Desktop printers can, in fact, do just about anything you need them to. Want to send a fax? Get a printer with an imbedded scanner and it's likely you'll be able to do so. You can even make copies in color or in black and white, scan images into your computer, make photo prints on good photo paper, and even print directly from the memory card of your camera without even having to bother going through the computer.
And, of course, desktop printers print. There are many ways that they do this. The most common – and cheapest – method of printing is the simple inkjet or bubblejet technique, which uses minute and precise sprays of ink onto paper to generate the final image. This method is also fairly slow, especially when printing images or in color.
A much faster method is called laser printing technology. A desktop printer designed using lasers prints very quickly, making them great for business applications where large volumes of information must be printed to hard copy. Unfortunately, laser desktop printers are also much more expensive than most other printers.
