The Versatile All-in-One Printer
It’s amazing to see year after year, technological advances that create more compact and multi-function products. Take for instance the all-in-one printer. They print, scan, copy, fax, and even have slots to insert your digital camera memory card to store or print pictures.
I remember starting out with a laser printer before there was a consumer ink-jet model. Then I bought a thermal fax machine to primarily send out documents that needed my signature. I had to have a scanner to copy faxes because fax machines back then made lousy copies and they were in grayscale. I even bought a copy machine because it made copies much faster than using the scanner. Can you imagine the time it took to scan a 5 page document because you wanted a copy?
A duplex laser printer was the next purchase. A duplex printer prints on the front and back of paper saving you a lot of money on paper. I then purchased an ink-jet printer because it could print in color. Having an ink-jet printer also meant I could print with higher resolution. Now I could print flyers, business cards, color documents, and photos. Fortunately my digital camera could connect to my PC and I could download the photos from my camera and then print to the inkjet color printer.
Now days, the all-in-one printer can do everything all the individual pieces of equipment can do collectively, and for a lot less expense. Let’s not forget about space, cables, and supplies. An all-in-one printer has a tiny footprint and weighs practically nothing. On the other hand, I’ve had to make space for a fax machine, copier, scanner, laser and inkjet printer. Don’t forget the cables, one for each device. If you’ve priced USB and Firewire cables, they’re expensive! And the supplies: toners, drums, and specialty paper.
The only supply you need for an all-in-one printer is printer cartridges. Because all-in-one printers are becoming so inexpensive, over the life of the printer, you might spend up to 10 times the amount on printer cartridges than the cost of the printer itself.
The all-in-one printer is very versatile machine!
