War On Words - Fighting The Spammers

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Anyone with an email address these days has no choice but to be concerned about how to stop junk email, no matter what you do they just still keeps coming, and the latest trend is to send pdf files which are actually viruses.

For the astute people amongst us we tend to be in the know about the latest virus threat so we tend to be on the lookout, but what about all those of you who just want to read their e-mail and are just not aware of the risks.

Just this evening alone I have won two lotteries, been offered a job (not that I have applied for any), have two people from two different countries want me to help them shift unclaimed millions from war zones and dare I say it,have had a number of e-mails from lonely women who want to speak to me - click here to view my photos…..Yeah right!!

But how many thousands of people get caught each day purely out of sheer curiosity?

One of the best ways to stop junk email is to not to share your e-mail address with anybody but your closest friends. This is fine if your contact is quite casual but for those that are busy online each day this is a very hard thing to do for example, If you have an email address through your website, there may be nothing you can do about that as the little pests (yes I could use a stronger word) now use specially developed software to scour the net for open e-mail addresses.

However, you can open a yahoo, hotmail or gmail account for yourself as this will help filter some of the rubbish that seems to be on the increase. Another way to try and avoid spam is to have a number of different accounts that you use for different reasons. An example of this method would be to have one address for online signups, a different address suspect downloads, you know- the ones that ask for your e-mail to receive a free e-book or the like. And a final address for your personal contacts.

You can also stop junk email by remembering as mentioned previously, that there are bots (internet spiders) that scan the Internet looking for exposed email addresses. This means that if you post on a message board that you need help or want someone to contact you, and you list your email address, chances are good your address will be picked up and sold to spam mailers. If you want to stop junk email, you simply must avoid doing this at all costs or use your “suspect” e-mail address if you have no choice.

You can also get a special program to help stop junk email. This software will return and email to sender and ask them to fill out a code to verify they are a real person. Though you may miss a few emails this way, anyone who wants to reach you will fill out the little box and the email will then be allowed to pass through.

If you have a business email, you may not be able to find a way to stop junk email entirely while letting all important emails through. For the time being, you may just have to put up with it, but If your not sure about the sender…..bin it!

Printer Repair - Fix it or Trash it

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Just when you have an important document that needs to be printed right away, you discover you are having printer problems and it seems the more you try to get it working, the worse the problem get. When you have exhausted all your tricks, sometimes there’s just nothing else to do but call in the professionals for printer repair.

And, even at that, if you’re like most people, you’ll come back, open up that cover one more time, test the connections, press the reset button, jiggle the ink cartridge, search the paper path for a jam, check out every area to try to find a clue. Then you’ll sit down and open up the printer repairs computer software to diagnose the problem or just try to print again.

Because the price of new PC printer repair has come down so much, it brings up questions about which way to go when printer problems come up. Is it really worth doing printer repair? Would it be better to just buy a brand new printer? What if you pay to repair it, but then it still has problems printing correctly?

Much of the decision process about whether to call for repair or not will come down to how much you spent on your printer in the first place. If you spent less than $100 for it to begin with then you will probably do just as well to buy a new one.

However, if you have a cheap printer, but you find yourself with a stockpile of ink for it, and those cartridges don’t fit any models of printers on the market, may it makes sense to try to figure out what has gone wrong, and see if printer replacement parts might solve your problem and save your ink stash.

If you have a more expensive printer, either one that does high-end color reproductions, or one that features scanning and faxing functions in addition to printing, or a laser printer as opposed to an inkjet, then computer printer repairs will probably make more sense in that instance.

Before laying out money on PC printer repair services, be sure to check what kind of warranty coverage you have, and see if it can be repaired or replace under the warranty. Even if you are outside of your warranty coverage, it can’t hurt to contact the company to see what they can do for you. There are instances reported where the company is so eager to be sure you keep buying their cartridges that they may go ahead and replace your printer.

If you are not lucky enough for that, then you will want to check with the manufacturer for a listing of authorized repair services in your area. If no one is authorized in your area, then it is probably best to send the printer to the manufacturer for repair, to be sure the repairs are done according to manufacturer specifications.

When it is time to decide if you should seek out printer repair, or simply send your old printer to the trash heap and get a brand new one, be sure to take some time to know your options so that you are making the best use of your money.
