Back in 1999, The American Film Institute came out with the listing of the top 50 actors from the annals of American Films. These actors are from the launch and the golden times of Hollywood. Many of today's actors may have more ability and they may be better actors but these fine actors will always be remembered.
The catalog starts out with the legendary Humphrey Bogart. Humphrey Bogart acted in 75 films first in the 1930's and up to the 1950's. His most distinguished role was doubtless the part of Rick Blaine in one of the most popular films of all times, "Casablanca". He was born on Christmas day, December 25, 1899. He passed away on January 14, 1957 from cancer of the esophagus.
Coming in at the number 2 spot is Cary Grant. Born Archibald Alexander Leach on January 18, 1904 and departed on November 29, 1986. The number 3 spot on the listing goes to Jimmy Stewart, who is still seen every year at Christmas for the beloved classic "It's a Wonderful Life".
Marlon Brando, Jr. Born April 3, 1924 and passed on July 1, 2004 comes in at number 4 on the record. He is followed by Fred Astaire, born Frederick Austerlitz on May 10, 1899 and deceased June 22, 1987. Fred Astaire's stage and silver screen career spanned a entirety of seventy-six years. During that time he finished thirty-one musical films. He made 10 movies with the partner with whom he was most often linked, Ginger Rogers.
Number six on the list is Henry Fonda, born May 16, 1905, died August 12, 1982. Henry is followed at number 7 by Clark Gable, whose most renowned character was the renowned "Rhett Butler" in "Gone With the Wind", which when accounting for inflation is the most money-making motion picture of all time.
Number eight on the listing is James Cagney. Following that is Spencer Tracy at the number nine spot. Spencer Tracy and the number one actress on the AFI list, Katharine Hepburn were one of the most flourishing movie pairings in Hollywood history. They also had a extended romance off-screen.
The top ten list is rounded out by the only actor from the silent film period. Charlie Chaplin began his career in 1916 before talking films. He did not have his first true "talking" motion picture until 1940 with "The Great Dictator".
Of course, beloved actors, actresses and movies are always personal. Each one has a diverse estimation on what is perceived as best. But the listing of the top stars does consist of the players who made their mark on film history.
