Computer security means a security which is used in computer and network. When some unauthorized person works on our computer than computer security is used in detecting that person and preventing that person from using it. In order to be safe as we use computer in day today life computer security is very essential. Its main objective is to protect the important data from thefts so that he could not be able to corrupt the data.

There are three layers in the computer security:

Hacking

An unauthorized person uses the computer is known as hacking. Cyber crimes main components include hacking.

Cracking

When the intension of the unauthorized person is of causing harm and creating problem than such a unauthorized intrusion is known as cracking.

Phreaking

Cracking of the phone network by unauthorized person it is known as phreaking

Measures taken for the improvement in computer security are:

The person who will compromise with security will not be allowed to access computer. Dependence on computer programs for computer security is prohibited and hence necessity for development of hardware mechanism. Operating system mechanism development is also necessary for imposing the rules on programmes. Planning for programming strategies is also very important.

How to do computer security

There are many ways for doing this. Here are some ways

Updating the software’s is very necessary  so keep updating the software One of the most common ways of computer security is using firewall. It tells us everything like data which has gone out and the data which has entered in. Password used should contain alphabet, numeric value and sign and it should be changed every now and then. Antivirus should be present and should be updated from time to time. Encryption is very necessary as it secures our data to a maximum extent.

Computer securities have some technical areas on which it works are

ü  Authentication

Confidentiality here means keeping things private or in secrecy so that unauthorized person cannot use it then comes integrity which means changes cannot be made by any unauthorized user as it is protected and last authentication means the person who is authorized for that that.

Computer security professionals are concerned mainly about  access control and nonrepudiation.

Access control means not only that user can access the resource and services but user has to access the resources which he legitimately expects.

Nonrepudiation means if a person sends a message then he cannot deny that he has sends it and vice versa.

I have windows vista ultimate and i want to install some antiviruses.
I have webroot-spysweeper and norton antivirus. Can i install both of them? I tried installing 2 different antiviruses on my other computer and it totally crashed! Since i have 2 different products, i wonder if it will always crash if you have more than 1 antivirus working on 1 computer.

For a really good anti-virus you actually have to pay money, Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security are different things that protect different parts, I like to use AVG, even the free version is pretty good.

It is important that you have the most current protection. Hackers search on the internet for computers that are either unprotected or don't have the latest protection features. Hackers can hack into your computer and install software on your computer. This will enable them to steal login details of your online bank accounts, other membership sites like Ebay, Paypal etc. and also send Spam emails that appear to originate from your computer. Sending Spam emails that appear to originate from your email address can result in your account being revoked!

4. Store your computer information safely

Storing your computer information safely can help the technician who is fixing/ restoring your computer. For example, on Windows, Click Start and then choose Run. This will bring up small window wherein you need to type ‘msinfo32' without the quotes. This will bring up a system window. On this widow, choose the file menu and then Export. Export your system information on to a CD. Similarly, for other operating systems, search on Google.com for information on storing the system information on a CD.

It is important to back up important files. Determine what you would do to restore your computer if it has been attacked. Pretend that your computer file system has been corrupted and then what steps would you take to restore. You will realize that having a backup can make things easy for you.

6. Use strong password authentication

When you signup for an online membership like online bank, , Paypal, Ebay etc., do not use weak passwords that can make it easy for people who know you or have your some information about, easy to hack. Using your significant other's name, child's name, pet's name etc. are weak. Use something stronger like first letters of the address of the house where you were born concatenated to your birth year or something along those lines. It is best if the password is NOT some meaningful word!

7. Protect your personal information

If you are asked to give out personal information like phone number, address, SSN, identification numbers etc. on the internet, use more caution. Find out exactly why and how they will be used. If there is a link in your email that asks you to login by clicking on the link, then don't! Usually genuine emails don't ask you to login directly by clicking a link in the email. If you want to login to your membership accounts, always open a new browser and then type the URL of the website (to login to Paypal account, type paypal.com on the new browser instead of clicking on the link from an email that is asking you to login.).

If you are giving out credit card information, then the page that accepts credit card information must have secure encryption. The URL usually begins with https instead of the regular http. If you right click and select properties, the Connection section should read something like 128 bit encryption (High) and also must have 1024 bit exchange.

Connecting a computer to an external network (for instance, the Net) introduces the chance that outside assailants will exploit the network, maybe by taking network information or by impacting the network's performance (for instance, by introducing viruses). However, even if a network were disconnected from any external network, security threats (in reality, the majority of the likely security threats) would still exist.

In particular, according to the Computer Security Institute (CSI) in San Francisco, California, roughly 60 to 80 percent of network misuse situations spring from the interior network. Thus, although network isolation is never possible in today's e-business environment, even physical isolation from other networks doesn't guarantee computer security.

Then, those IP addresses may be the subject of a port scan, in which open services on those hosts are discovered. The assailant could then attempt to exploit a known weakness to compromise one of the discovered services on a host. If the attacker gains control of the host, he could use that as a jumping-off point to attack other systems in the network.

Based on these factors, network administrators must consider both internal and external threats.  By monitoring computer security, you can significantly reduce operating expenses and improve overall company productivity.

Why is computer security so easy to bypass.
In Xp you can lock your files and folders from other users so they cant view them but if you attached the hard drive with xp on it to a vista pc or laptop vista will bypass xp,s security and let you view all files.

Why is is so easy to bypass vista passwords too And why is it that you can use a usb device to take controll and get sensative data from pcs and laptops.

I have always learnt how to bypass security by any means.
Even the secure pc can be breeched so why is pc security so weak?.

xp & vista are very weak and most of the population use windows even with the security packs installed and the latest updates installed a pc can still be breeched.

I do not think anyone who owns a pc would be safe security wise so why do people even bother with security programs most of them cant detect newly programed code and by the time they do its too late.

The Need for Physical Computer Security

Imagine showing up to the office one morning to the chilling reality of having been a victim of theft. Laptop computers are missing, LCD monitors gone and, most disturbingly, the space where the file server is vastly empty. Not only are you faced with the loss of expensive and valuable equipment, but also the critical data you are accountable for has now been compromised. Theft of valuable and sensitive computer equipment can have extreme repercussions and costs to businesses, individuals, and the general public.

You hear it all the time but never imagine it will happen to you. Unfortunately, computer theft and tampering is real and occurs more often than most people realize. As technologies improve and computers become even more lightweight and mobile, the risk of theft and security intrusions also increases. Unsecured laptops and other computer equipment are easy targets for theft in any office or public environment. Whether it is a school, private office, airport or library, there is the potential for computer theft and tampering from both external and internal threats.

According to a 2006 study by the Ponemon Institute, there was an 81% increase in the number of computers reporting stolen laptops containing sensitive information. A survey conducted by the FBI in the same year reported that 47% of computer security professionals reported a laptop theft in the past twelve months. At the office of American International Group, a file server and several laptop computers were stolen and compromised the private data of over 970,000 potential customers. While traveling, an Equifax company laptop was stolen from an employee risking personal information including employee names and social security numbers.

Well, maybe this will only affect business travelers and high traffic office environments? Nope. Computer theft can happen anywhere from a presentation hall to your very own home. An ING US employee found this out when a company computer was stolen from their home exposing the personal identities of over 13,000 employees and retirees in the District of Columbia. Similarly, an employee of the Department of Veteran Affairs had a company laptop stolen from home compromising the personal information of 26.5 million US war veterans.

How do you protect yourself and your valuable equipment? Often it is just common sense, but there are many computer security solutions available to safeguard your equipment and data. At any computer workstation, a computer cable lock could be enough to prevent a laptop, printer, or monitor from being stolen. Computer security cables, computer locks, and laptop locks are all cost effective solutions that could easily deter a thief and motivate them to move on to other, easier targets. One major retailer in the US has already invested in new computer security locks throughout their chain to comply with PCI data security standards. For file servers and larger computer hardware, complete computer enclosures and computer lockers can also effectively secure equipment from theft and tampering.

It is better to ere on the side of caution and safeguard your computer equipment than risk losing everything. Thinking that computer theft will never happen to you only makes it harder to deal with if it ever does. By taking some time to consider computer security options, you protect your valuable equipment and the data within it.

Computer Security: How You Can Improve Yours

The objective behind the concept of computer security actually varies quite a bit depending on the use of the computer. Computer security may include the protection of specific information from corruption or theft, for example. In general this can impose specific requirements on computers in addition to most standard system requirements. There are a number of different typical approaches that can be taken when it comes to improving computer security, including the following:

- Physically limiting the access to a computer so that computer security will not be compromised by those who are granted access to use it.

- Utilizing hardware mechanisms that can create and impose rules for specific computer programs, allowing computer security to be imposed without requiring individual programs to implement it.

- Implementing operating system or OS mechanisms that are capable of creating and imposing rules that avoid having to trust programs on the computer.

- Implementing programming strategies that allow subversion to be resisted and make computer programs more dependable.

In most cases, the computer security devices that are put into place are dependent upon the application uses the computer is created for. Different computer systems require different levels of security, as the level of privacy or protection needed is going to vary significantly. Computer systems under government control, for example, require a much higher level of security than computers used by students in a university setting. The level of required computer security, then, along with what forms of security are implemented, are going to vary significantly as well.

Implementing computer security may include creating or utilizing secure operating systems, though much of the science associated with this form of security was developed several decades ago. Security architecture is another option, and involves describing how specific security countermeasures and controls are positioned to protect the information technology. Firewalls are an example of security meant to protect computers from threats that travel via the internet or peer to peer connections. Chain of trust techniques are techniques that are used to ensure that all software on a computer is certified as authentic directly from the designers of the system. Access control is used to ensure the separation of privileges, ensuring that only specified people have the right capabilities on a computer system.

There are also cryptographic techniques which transform information into something that is meant to be indecipherable by anyone but approved persons. Information can also be secured for computer security purposes using backup files which allow important files to be protected by creating copies should they ever become corrupted or destroyed.

Essentially, the primary focus of the computer security field of information technology is to protect the integrity of computers, the data contained within them, and any information that may require restricted access. Some level of computer security is needed by anyone who owns a computer, including student computers in a university setting, computers owned and operated by the government, and even the laptop that you use to check your e-mail at night.
